In celebration of the 75th anniversary of Philippine-Portuguese Diplomatic Relations (1946-2021), the CTT Correios de Portugal (Post of Portugal) issued a goodwill quincentennial stamp dedicated by the Portuguese people to the Filipino people. It features Bernando Maac’s winning entry in the Quincentennial Art Competition, “Presentation of the Icon” (2020). It depicts the gifting of the Flemish-style image of the child Jesus by Portuguese-born Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães) to the queen of Cebu, Juana, signaling the introduction of the Christian faith to our ancestors 500 years ago.

This gesture was through the efforts of the Philippine Embassy in Portugal on behalf of the National Quincentennial Committee, Republic of the Philippines. It was supported by NQC’s counterpart in Portugal, Estrutura de Missão para as Comemorações do V Centenário de Fernão de Magalhães.

Seeing this post? Curious what this is about? 2021 is the Year of Filipino Pre-Colonial Ancestors by virtue of Proclamation No. 1128, s. 2021. Also in this year, we commemorate the Philippine part in the achievement of science and humankind in circumnavigating the planet for the first time. Central in this commemoration is the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan on 27 April 2021. These and more are collectively known as the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines by virtue of Executive Order No. 103 (2020). Know more about the event here: ?
