The National Quincentennial Committee (NQC) received from artist Rey Guimba a depiction of Lapulapu, the defiant chief of Mactan in 1521. Titled Lapulapu, the artist shared the rights to the committee in using it for academic purposes.

According to Guimba, he was inspired by the pronouncements of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte that Lapulapu should be given the acknowledgment he deserves. The artist is also hoping that his artwork may be reproduced by various government offices and public schools following Memorandum Circular No. 25, s. 2017 which directed them to display or exhibit the photographs, paintings or other forms of visual representations of Philippine heroes.

“Naisip ko kasi since wala talagang malinaw at konkretong pagsasalarawan mula pa noon, sa tunay at totoong imahen ni Lapulapu, perhaps, ito na yung chance na makapag-ambag ako sa kasaysayan at gawan ko siya ng imahen base on what I have read, combined with my own interpretation kung panu ko siya napipicture during his time,” Guimba noted.

This 2021, the country will commemorate the Philippine part in the achievement of science and humankind in circumnavigating the planet for the first time. Central in this commemoration is the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan on 27 April 2021. These and more are collectively known as the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines by virtue of Executive Order No. 103 (2020). Know more about the event here: ?
